VETERAN RECORDS

Senate Bill 960, which became effective July 1, 2002, requires County Clerks to keep DD Form 214 records separate from records available for public inspection.

  1. All DD Forms 214 are to be kept separate from records available for public inspection.
  2. A record of the names of veterans who have filed DD Forms 214 shall be made available for public inspection.  (Reception Record showing names of veterans who have filed DD Forms 214 is still available to the public.)
  3. The only persons authorized to view and/or copy the DD Form 214 is:
    1. The veteran.
    2. The veteran's spouse or child.
    3. A guardian for or a person having power of attorney for the veteran, the spouse  or child, upon presentation f a court order showing such.
    4. A representative of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
    5. A funeral director upon presentation of a contract signed by the person responsible for the funeral costs of the veteran.
    6. A person authorized by the court to view or copy the DD Form 214 upon presentation of the court order.
  4. The clerk shall record the names and addresses of the above person viewing and or copying a DD Form 214.
